Pre-Service Teacher Project

[Educators Grades K-8 & Students Higher Education]
[Available: Nationally]

The NASA Langley Pre-Service Teacher Project, or PSTP, is a partnership between the Langley Office of Education and the National Institute of Aerospace. The aim of the project is to give pre-service teachers and faculty members opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skill in teaching mathematics and science by using technology at the elementary and middle school levels.

The partnership has resulted in a series of annual Pre-Service Teacher Conferences, or PSTCs, and Pre-Service Teacher Summer Institutes. The PSTC is held each spring and hosts hundreds of prospective elementary and middle school teachers from selected Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and some majority institutions. Students and faculty are exposed to invigorating general sessions and hands-on workshops. The PSTC culminates with a Career Day where students have the opportunity to interview with recruiters from public schools and graduate schools from across the country.

The Pre-Service Teacher Institute, or PSTI, was developed because of the need to provide a more in-depth experience for pre-service teachers. At the PSTI, pre-service teachers spend two weeks in an intensive experience where they are exposed to problem-based learning, mathematics, science and technology enrichment activities. Pre-service teachers are able to interface with NASA personnel and tour NASA facilities. The educators learn to incorporate NASA's cutting-edge research into lesson plans for elementary and middle school students. The institute culminates with the pre-service teachers developing and teaching problem-based lessons to children from local schools.

PSTIs are also held at Ames Research Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, and Stennis Research Center.
