organization, is currently in the process of developing an accreditation
standard for organizations conducting environmental field sampling
and on-site measurements. The Field Activities Committee, an expert

INELA, will begin a 2-year standards development cycle by introducing
a Working Draft Standard (initial draft) version of this field accreditation
standard at its semiannual summer

World Water Monitoring Day -- The National
Water Quality Monitoring Council is pleased to support the World
Water Monitoring Day 2004. The Council appreciates
the leadership of America's Clean Water Foundation and the many interorganizational
efforts to organize and host the second World Water Monitoring Day from September
18 to October 18, 2004. This effort is an ambitious followup to 2002's National
Water Monitoring Day and 2003's inaugural World Water Monitoring Day. The success
of these events and the growing momentum for this year's event are a striking

Hold the Date World Water
Monitoring Day will be celebrated on October 18, 2003. It is an extension
of National Water Monitoring Day, which enjoyed its inaugural year in 2002
as part of the Year of Clean Water events highlighting the anniversary of the
enactment of the Federal Clean Water Act. Last year there were 5,150 sites
registered across the country.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced the availability of the Summary of Biological Assessment
Programs and Biocriteria Development for States, Tribes, Territories and Interstate
Commissions: Streams and Wadeable Rivers Document (EPA-822-R-02-048). This
document provides technical and programmatic information which illustrates
the progress States, Tribes, Territories and Interstate Commissions are making
in the utilization of biological assessments and criteria in their water programs
for protecting streams and small rivers.

Water and the Environment - Water and the Environment is
the fifth publication in the AGI Environmental Awareness Series and was prepared
under the sponsorship of AGI's Environmental Geoscience Advisory Committee

EPA Awards Water Security Training Grants - As part of EPA's initiative to help small drinking water utilities
assess their vulnerabilities to terrorism, EPA Assistant Administrator for
Water G. Tracy Mehan, III announced the awarding of $1.5 million in grants
for Water Security Training and Assistance to five nonprofit training and technical
assistance organizations. The program is authorized under the Public Health
Security and Bio-terrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002.

Grants of $15 Million Announced by EPA For 20 Groups Under
Watershed Initiative - Twenty organizations
working on community-based approaches to clean up their watersheds were awarded
grants totaling $15 million May 2 from the Environmental Protection Agency
under the Bush administration's Watershed Initiative. The grants are intended
to be used by local watershed protection groups to address the "most pernicious
water quality problems," such as habitat loss and alteration, nutrient enrichment,
pathogens, and invasive species, according to G. Tracy Mehan, EPA assistant
administrator for water.
