If You Are An OEF/OIF Veteran…

Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.   Northport VA Medical Center is committed to support returning troops from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and to make sure they have the health care and entitlements they earned and deserve.

Active-duty personnel and Reservist or National Guard members who serve in a theater of combat operations are eligible for VA care and services for injuries or illnesses related to combat service for five years beginning on the date of their discharge or release from service. OEF/OIF veterans who don't enroll with VA within five years of separation from active duty, have no VA-rated service-connected disabilities and earn more than the geographically based income threshold will be subject to the same eligibility criteria as other veterans and may be ineligible for enrollment. For this reason, all OEF/OIF veterans are strongly encouraged to enroll with VA upon their release from the military.

OEF/OIF veterans who enroll with VA within the first five years after separation from active duty may continue to receive VA care after the two years elapse based on the standard rules of VA health care enrollment.

Who to Contact

To learn how to apply for VA health care or for information about the health care services available for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans, please visit or call Northport VA Medical Center’s OEF/OIF Combat veteran and Tricare/DOD Office, located on the first floor of Bldg. 200.  You may also call, toll-Free, 1-800-444-0001.

Other Veterans’ Eligibility for VA Health Care

Eligibility for VA health care is dependent upon a number of factors, which may influence the final determination of the services for which you qualify. These factors include the nature of a veteran's discharge from military service (e.g., honorable, other than honorable, dishonorable), length of service, VA adjudicated disabilities (commonly referred to as service-connected disabilities), and income level among others.

Generally, you must be enrolled in the VA health care system to receive benefits offered in the VA Medical Benefits Package. To apply for VA health care benefits, go to http://www1.va.gov/health/clinical.html.  You must complete an Application for Health Benefits Form 10-10EZ at https://www.1010ez.med.va.gov/sec/vha/1010ez/.  We use the application to determine:

  • Whether you have qualifying service as a veteran
  • What your veteran status is so that you can be placed into one of the established priority groups

For more information about VA health care eligibility, please visit VA’s health eligibility web page at: http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility/.  You can also check on your eligibility for VA health care by contacting Northport VA Medical Center’s Admissions Section Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at (631) 261-4400, ext. 2659.
