Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao
DOL Tree Lighting Ceremony
December 6, 2001

Santa, Secretary Chao, and Children from the DOL Child Development CenterThank you, James. And I want to thank the children from the Child Development Center for that wonderful song. There is nothing quite as sweet as the sound of children's voices during the holidays.

I also want to extend my appreciation to Bennett Gamble. He has been leading the music at the Department for many years. He is one of our Department's hidden treasures. Thank you, Bennett.

Welcome to the annual Department of Labor tree lighting ceremony. The holiday season has special meaning this year. We are filled with new appreciation for the blessings of life and love. And we are reminded of the things that matter most -- the love of family and friends, the gift of freedom, and a faith that gives us eternal peace and enduring hope.

Americans are a charitable and generous people, but this year the season of giving came a little early. Over the past few months, we've been inspired by the outpouring of American compassion. Gifts of financial contributions. Gifts of a comforting embrace. And the most precious gift - the laying down of one's life for the sake of another. We remember those who are without loved ones this holiday season.

The DOL TreeThe tree is a symbol of giving. Around it, family and friends gather to exchanging gifts of love and charity. This year's tree is adorned in red, white, and blue to remind us that we've been given the gift of freedom. And we remember our men and women in uniform who are risking their lives to preserve our way of life.

As Americans, we are blessed with so much. And I hope that this holiday season you will take the time to remember the little things - the simple gifts - that give us great hope and joy.

Speaking of gifts… Before I light the tree, I would like to ask the Director of the Child Development Center, Pamela Ray, to please join me.

Three years ago, the Wirtz Labor Library created the "Secretary's Bookshelf." It is a collection of books presented by friends and employees of the Department to recognize special occasions, such as the one we celebrate today. The Bookshelf is a commitment by this Department to encourage the love of reading and life-long learning. I want to thank Dorothy Weed from the library for her work in implementing this idea.

As you may know, the First Lady Laura Bush is a strong proponent of teaching the joys of reading to young children. She herself is an avid reader. The President and she also believe that it's important for parents to read to their children.

I am pleased today to present three children's books to the Secretary's Bookshelf on behalf of the dedicated professionals at the Department.

Thank you, Pamela.

May this season bring peace on earth and goodwill to all of mankind. I want to wish you all a very special holiday season.

It is now my pleasure to light the 2001 Department of Labor tree.
