UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS
REPORT

DATA
In the week ending April 7, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 392,000, an increase
of 9,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 383,000. The 4-week
moving average was 380,500, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's
unrevised average of 377,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment rate was 2.0 percent for the week ending March 31,
unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.0 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending March 31 was 2,565,000,
an increase of 71,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,494,000. The
4-week moving average was 2,509,750, an increase of 21,500 from the
preceding week's revised average of 2,488,250.
UNADJUSTED
DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under
state programs, unadjusted, totaled 395,124 in the week ending April 7, an
increase of 65,758 from the previous week. There were 274,114 initial
claims in the comparable week in 2000.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent during the week ending March 31, unchanged from the
prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in
state programs totaled 2,870,527, an increase of 7,617 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was
2,167,594.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during
the week ending March 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former
Federal civilian employees totaled 1,066 in the week ending March 31, an
increase of 81 from the prior week. There were 1,057 initial claims by newly
discharged veterans, an increase of 28 from the preceding week.
There were 19,449 former Federal civilian
employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 24, a decrease of
2,963 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits
totaled 12,760, a decrease of 486 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the
week ending March 24 were in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Alaska (5.8), Oregon
(3.6), Washington (3.5), Idaho (3.3), Michigan (3.3), Rhode Island (3.3),
Wisconsin (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.2), Arkansas (2.9), California (2.9), and
Montana (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the
week ending March 31 were in Indiana (+1,571), Puerto Rico (+1,195), Oregon
(+962), Iowa (+857), and Maryland (+833), while the largest decreases were in
Michigan (-6,153), Mississippi (-2,076), Pennsylvania (-1,268), Wisconsin
(-1,206), and Kentucky (-1,157).
