Labor Grants Will Aid
Dislocated Missouri Workers
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces
Two National Emergency Grants Totaling up to $3.8 Million to Supplement
Re-employment Programs
WASHINGTONDuring a visit to Saint Louis today, Secretary of
Labor Elaine L. Chao announced two National Emergency Grants totaling up to
$3.8 million to aid over 1050 Missouri workers laid-off in the airline
industry. Over $1.1 million will be awarded immediately. National Emergency
Grants are part of the secretarys discretionary fund. A grant is awarded
after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
The President and I are committed to helping displaced workers
access the job and skills training they need to find new jobs that will enable
them to provide for themselves and their families, Chao said. We
hope these funds will be deployed as quickly as possible to help these Missouri
workers."
The grant projects deliver critical help to unemployed Missouri
citizens, underscoring one of the main goals of the Presidents economic
agenda. A grant of up to $2.1 million will aid workers affected by lay offs
from American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways in the
Saint Louis area. Dislocated workers from Vanguard Airlines in Kansas City will
receive up to $1.7 million in aid.
The Missouri Division of Workforce Development is the grantee for both
grants. The programs will supplement existing re-employment programs including:
job search assistance, job development, job placement, basic skills training
and counseling.
Helping American workers who have lost their jobs remains a top
priority for this Administration, said Chao.
