UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 290,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 298,000. The 4-week moving average was 308,000, a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average of 314,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 6, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 6 was 2,530,000, an increase of 120,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,410,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,473,250, an increase of 4,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,469,250.  

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 511,643 in the week ending Jan. 13, an increase of 6,531 from the previous week. There were 439,873 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending Jan. 6, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,178,053, an increase of 169,813 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 3,162,229.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 30.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,886 in the week ending Jan. 6, an increase of 347 from the prior week. There were 1,764 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 436 from the preceding week.

There were 18,283 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 30, a decrease of 1,585 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,303, an increase of 552 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 30 were in Alaska (4.7 percent), Michigan (4.3), Wisconsin (4.2), Arkansas (3.7), Pennsylvania (3.5), Rhode Island (3.5), Oregon (3.4), Vermont (3.4), Connecticut (3.3), and New Jersey (3.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 6 were in New York (+27,037), North Carolina (+14,494), Georgia (+11,700), Tennessee (+7,645), and Alabama (+5,127), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-16,778), Wisconsin (-11,968), Pennsylvania (-11,705), Iowa (-7,836), and Massachusetts (-5,382).
