ABSTRACT: The LEMS encompasses all evidence received and stored in the DEA laboratory system. It tracks the receipt and movement of evidence using bar code technology.

PURPOSE: Maintains a complete inventory of evidence submitted to the DEA laboratories also maintains an electronic chain of custody.

ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: Access to the system is limited to official personnel assigned to the Office of Forensic Sciences.

USER CONSTRAINTS: Use of the database is restricted to those authorized to access information in order to perform assigned tasks.

AGENCY PROGRAM: The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) enforces the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States. DEA maintains investigative and intelligence files of criminal activities related to illicit drug traffic investigations of legitimate drug handlers, distributors, and manufacturers. DEA also maintains records of controlled substance security investigations.

SOURCE OF DATA: Data contained in LEMS is the result of DEA investigations and data provided by federal, state, local, criminal justice agencies, noncriminal justice agencies and other entities.
