ABSTRACT: The Controlled Substances Act System (CSA) Database is made up of the following: The CSA Master File (CSAMAST) - contains information on active registrants responsible for handling controlled substances. The CSA History File (CSAHIST) - contains historic information generated by changes to (transactions) individual information (name, address, etc.) on the Master File. The CSA Table File (CSATABLE) - contains code tables used for validation of data entry information, printing of coded information (for reports, and display purpose), and for updating and processing master records. The CSA History Archive - contains 3 years or more of history records from the History File.

PURPOSE: Controlled Substances Act System (CSA) has been designed to track and report on persons or businesses involved with the legal distribution or dispensing of controlled substances.

ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: All records in CSA are protected from unauthorized access through appropriate administrative, physical, and technical safeguards. These safeguards include restricting access to those with a need-to-know to perform their official duties, using passwords and/or encrypting data communications.

USE CONSTRAINTS: Use of this system is restricted to those authorized to access information necessary to perform assigned tasks.

AGENCY PROGRAM: The on-line interactive Controlled Substances Act System (CSA) was originated in support of the Controlled Substances Act mandated by U.S. congressional legislation in 1970. Under federal law, all businesses which manufacture or distribute controlled drugs, all health professionals entitled to dispense, administer or prescribe them, and all pharmacies entitled to fill prescriptions must maintain an active registration. Registrants must comply with a series of regulatory requirements relating to drug security, records accountability, and adherence to standards. The CSA System provides the Office of Diversion Control within the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with real-time, direct access management of all subject registrants, and is considered to be critical to the support of the DEA mission.

SOURCE OF DATA: Data contained in CSA is the result of information provided by DEA applicants/registrants registering to become authorized users of Controlled Substances and information obtained as a result of DEA investigations.
