UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 399,000, an increase of  7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 392,000. The 4-week moving average was 407,500, a decrease of  9,500 from the previous week's revised average of 417,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending June 23, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 23 was 3,027,000, an increase of 52,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,975,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,973,000, an increase of 13,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,959,500.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 371,139 in the week ending June 30, an increase of 18,921 from the previous week. There were 280,953 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending June 23, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,748,729, an increase of 44,525 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,876,056.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 16.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,444 in the week ending June 23, an increase of 328 from the prior week. There were 1,154 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 109 from the preceding week.

There were 15,244 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 16, an increase of 927 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,752, an increase of 114 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 16 were in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Alaska (4.2), Oregon (3.4), Washington (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.0), Arkansas (2.9), California (2.8), Mississippi (2.6), New Jersey (2.6), and Rhode Island (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 23 were in New Jersey (+5,791), Massachusetts (+2,356), California (+2,145), New York (+1,764), and Rhode Island (+1,141), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-2,819), Tennessee (-2,432), Wisconsin (-2,140), Kentucky (-2,009), and Ohio (-1,989).
