Statement of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao,
Former Director of the Peace Corps and Former President of United Way of
America, on Bureau of Labor Statistics Survey on Volunteerism
WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the
following statement on the data released today on volunteering in the United
States:
“My experience working with organized labor, nonprofit
organizations, businesses, and individuals has reinforced my deeply held belief
that America is a generous and charitable nation. The increase in
America’s volunteerism demonstrates our long-standing tradition of helping
one another, unconnected by blood or marriage. The act of giving from stranger
to stranger builds the bonds of community in our diverse
country.”
