UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Sept. 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 450,000, an increase of 58,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 392,000. The 4-week moving average was 422,000, an increase of 11,750 from the previous week's revised average of 410,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Sept. 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.5 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 15 was 3,298,000,
an increase of 68,000 from the preceding week's revised level of
3,230,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,262,250, an increase of 36,000 from
the preceding week's revised average of 3,226,250. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 348,408 in the week ending Sept. 22, an increase of 31,382 from the previous week. There were 222,451 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Sept. 15, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,720,525, a decrease of 76,761 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,759,210. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 8. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,334 in the week ending Sept. 15, an increase of 239 from the prior week. There were 1,239 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 13 from the preceding week. There were 15,608 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 8, an increase of 1,452 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,202, an increase of 151 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 8 were in Puerto Rico (6.2 percent), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.1), California (3.0), Massachusetts (3.0), New Jersey (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), Alaska (2.8), Arkansas (2.8), Rhode Island (2.6), and South Carolina (2.6). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 15 were in North Carolina (+7,361), Alabama (+2,384), Virginia (+2,295), South Carolina (+2,281), and Iowa (+1,888), while the largest decreases were in Texas (-3,856), Ohio (-2,147), Michigan (-2,098), Kentucky (-1,876), and Pennsylvania (-1,807).
