UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Sept. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 387,000, a decrease of 49,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 436,000. The 4-week moving average was 409,000, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 412,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent for the week ending Sept. 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.6 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 8 was 3,243,000, a
decrease of 89,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,332,000.
The 4-week moving average was 3,230,000, an increase of 21,000 from the
preceding week's revised average of 3,209,000. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 312,955 in the week ending Sept. 15, an increase of 3,625 from the previous week. There were 246,017 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.2 percent during the week ending Sept. 8, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons
claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,808,454, an increase
of 66,083 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5
percent and the volume was 1,869,743. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Sept. 1. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,094 in the week ending Sept. 8, a decrease of 74 from the prior week. There were 1,247 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 99 from the preceding week. There were 14,289 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 1, a decrease of 1,827 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,189, an increase of 40 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 1 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Pennsylvania (3.0), Alaska (2.9), Rhode Island (2.9), California (2.8), Massachusetts (2.8), and Arkansas (2.7). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 8 were in North Carolina (+1,858), Pennsylvania (+993), Kentucky (+962), Ohio (+824), and Kansas (+757), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-3,513), California (-3,509), Missouri (-1,181), New Jersey (-1,092), and North Dakota (-1,092).
