UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Sept. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 431,000, an increase of 21,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 410,000. The 4-week moving average was 411,000, an increase of 11,500 from the previous week's revised average of 399,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending Sept. 1, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.5 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Sept. 1 was 3,345,000, an
increase of 152,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,193,000.
The 4-week moving average was 3,212,750, an increase of 73,000 from the
preceding week's revised average of 3,139,750. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 305,766 in the week ending Sept. 8, a decrease of 13,087 from the previous week. There were 228,732 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Sept. 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,752,544, a decrease of 108,152 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.4 percent and the volume was 1,811,808. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Aug. 25. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,167 in the week ending Sept. 1, a decrease of 2 from the prior week. There were 1,346 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 105 from the preceding week. There were 16,240 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Aug. 25, an increase of 1,184 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,299, an increase of 181 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Aug. 25 were in Puerto Rico (6.5 percent), Oregon (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.2), Washington (3.2), Alaska (3.1), New Jersey (3.1), Rhode Island (3.1), California (3.0), Massachusetts (3.0), Arkansas (2.6), Connecticut (2.6), and New York (2.6). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 1 were in Michigan (+3,829), Indiana (+1,713), Arkansas (+1,634), Texas (+1,304), and Missouri (+1,201), while the largest decreases were in New York (-2,639), North Carolina (-1,876), Alabama (-1,202), Florida (-799), and Idaho (-501).
