Statement of U.S. Secretary of Labor Regarding the U.S.
District Court Ruling to Proceed with the New Union Transparency Reforms
WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the
following statement regarding today’s decision by Judge Gladys Kessler of
the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to allow the
Department’s new union financial transparency rule to take effect as of
July 1, 2004:
“Judge Kessler’s latest decision is another major victory
for rank-and-file union members, who will now have access to meaningful
information about their union’s financial health, management and
priorities. In her opinion, Judge Kessler said that the arguments being made to
further delay the new financial transparency rule were
‘unconvincing.’”
