Ballet Folklorico Mexicapan
One of the ways of teaching Hispanic youth about
their culture and heritage is through the appreciation and
knowledge of folkloric dance, folk dances of the past. A youth
dance group formed in 1981 dedicated to preserving the dances of
Mexican folklore, the Ballet Folklorico Mexicapan numbers over 47
performers ranging in age from 5 to 23 years of age. Although most
of the dancers are Hispanic, the group is open to youth of any
cultural background who have a desire to learn Mexican cultures and
express themselves through this form of dance.
The performing group presents dances from various
states and regions of Mexico. They also hold an annual workshop,
now in its 30th year, in which a dance professor from Mexico is
invited to teach the group additional dances from the many states
of Mexico which have been influenced by diverse peoples, ranging
from French, German, and Swiss to Irish and Polish to African and
Caribbean.
The project is documented by a five-page report and
twelve 8 x 10 photographs.
