Ninety-four percent of Maine’s forests are privately owned. Forest land in the northern portion of the state is owned primarily by the forest industry (Butler 2005); accordingly, most timber harvest occurs there. Most of the family-owned land is in the southern portion of the state, where most of the population lives.
