North American Association of Central Cancer Registries

The mission of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) is to develop and promote uniform data standards for cancer registration; provide education and training; certify population-based registries; aggregate and publish data from central cancer registries; and promote the use of cancer surveillance data and systems for cancer control and epidemiologic research, public health programs, and patient care to reduce the burden of cancer in North America.

Established in 1987, NAACCR is a collaborative umbrella organization for cancer registries, governmental agencies, professional associations, and private groups in North America interested in enhancing the quality and use of cancer registry data. All central cancer registries in the United States and Canada are members.

Partnership Activities

CDC cooperative agreement with NAACCR includes resources to develop and provide infrastructure and management to address cancer registration issues including completeness, timeliness and quality in the collection of data. NAACCR certification of state cancer registry data is an example of that partnership. Resources are also provided to develop and provide infrastructure for the creation of educational materials, guidance and forums that promote the usage of cancer registry data for the purpose of cancer control and prevention. This is achieved through two annual Toolkit Workshops. In addition, CDC provides support for the annual meeting for central cancer registries, publication of national cancer incidence and mortality data, and an Internet site to provide information about the national organization and cancer registries.

CDC also has a contractual relationship with NAACCR to develop and produce educational and training materials; workshops to improve deficiencies in cancer registry management, operations, and quality control; and materials for the 2003 Cancer Registry Instructor Training course on Data Collection Brain Tumors.
