Project Title: Protecting San Francisco's Seniors from Environmental Health Hazards

Brief Summary: The Department of the Environment for the City and County of San Francisco (SF Environment) is requesting $25,000 from the EPA's Aging Initiative to reduce seniors' exposure to environmental hazards, increase senior participation in free and low cost toxic reduction programs currently being offered by the City and to work with seniors and senior networks to conduct outreach and education efforts to seniors by seniors.

Environmental outcomes: The project will reach a significant number of the 75,000 households. Participating seniors will have a reduced risk of toxic exposure. A mercury exchange program will be conducted for SF seniors. SFE will investigate opportunities for safe disposal of pharmaceuticals including pharmacy take- back and other retail and producer involvement and responsibilities. SFE will distribute outreach materials on unwanted or expired drugs.
