Project Title: Self-Managed Older Adult Environmental Leadership Teams

Project Location: Western North Carolina Counties (Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Transylvania)

Applicant Information: Land-of-Sky Regional Council

Type of applicant: Regional Council of Government

Total Grant: $25,000.00

Brief Summary: The project will provide advanced environmental training for older adults leading to the formation of self-managed teams that focus on environmental topics of importance in the Southern Appalachians and of interest to the teams. This training will be provided in two stages. The first stage will be an environmental institute surveying a wide range of environmental topics that are relevant to the Southern Appalachians. The second stage is environmental and leadership training addressing approximately four topic areas for four older adult volunteer teams. The group will build upon existing leadership training for older adults in our region and to provide additional environmental leadership training that will include self-management skills for the volunteer teams.

Environmental Outcomes: The Land-of-Skye Regional Council proposes to provide training and leadership opportunities to 50-100 older adults in their four county area service area in North Carolina. Since the teams will be self directed and will be responsible for determining what environmental hazards should be addressed, it is not possible at this point to determine which environmental factors will be addressed. However, with a large newly trained leadership group, ongoing positive environmental results are expected. Two to four volunteer teams will be formed to address pertinent smart growth and environmental issues.
