Project Title: Creating an Age-Friendly Community

Brief Summary: The Age-Friendly Community Initiative will integrate the principles of aging in place and smart growth in a pilot community to demonstrate how smart growth activities can improve the health of the rapidly growing older adult population. Working with a broad based community alliance of aging and planning professionals, elected officials, local leaders, and older adult advocates, (we) will demonstrate how a suburban county can change its current policies and community design strategies to increase the housing choices and transportation options available to older adults.

Environmental Outcomes: The Atlanta regional Council will integrate the principles of aging in place and smart growth in one pilot community, Cobb County, to demonstrate how smart growth activities can improve the health of the rapidly growing older adult population. They will demonstrate how a suburban county can change its current policies and community design strategies to increase housing and transportation choices and options available to older adults. The ARC developed a tool kit, which is intended to help local governments merge smart growth and aging in place priorities. This project will pilot the toolkit.
