Description
The Office on Disability and Health is a part of the Division of Human Development and Disability within NCBDD and works to prevent secondary conditions and promote health and wellness and quality of life for the 54 million Americans with a disibility. The program works toward this goal by providing public health leadership through technical and financial assistance to states and directed university-based research into the causes and factors contributing to secondary conditions, access to programs and services, and best practices toward the prevention of secondary conditions. The Office also supports national information centers facilitating the resource information and referrals for persons with limb loss, paralysis, and in promoting the benefits of physical activity and exercise for people with disabilites. It also collaborates with partners among the government, health agency, advocacy, and voluntary sectors to coordinate and implement new wellness strategies and interventions; and to direct the application of research findings to positively impact the lives of people with disibilites. The program addresses defined activities withing Healthy People 2010 to meet established national goals and objectives directly related to the health and community living for people with disibilites and their caregivers.
