Description
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) was established in 1974, and became part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services in October 1992. The Institute's divisions and offices play an important role in programs of drug abuse research. NIDA's mission is to lead the Nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. To achieve this goal NIDA supports and conducts research across a broad range of disciplines; and ensures the rapid and effective dissemination and use of the results of that research to significantly improve drug abuse and addiction prevention, treatment, and policy.
