Description

The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, an organization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, conducts applied research and analysis in nutrition knowledge and attitudes, dietary survey methodology, and dietary guidance and nutrition education techniques. CNPP uses research data to: 1) further understanding of the factors that influence consumer food choices, 2) provide dietary guidance in food selection and preparation, and in food money management, and 3) develop materials and techniques to help increase nutrition knowledge and to improve food selection and management. CNPP maintains data on the nutrient content of the U.S. Food Supply, a continuous time series which began in 1909. CNPP also maintains and periodically updates the USDA Food Plans upon which the Thrifty Food Plan is based that is used to determine food stamp allotments. Within USDA, CNPP coordinates the review and publication of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and develops information to help Americans put the Guidelines into practice such as the Food Guide Pyramid, Dietary Guidelines and Your Diet, and related publications.
