The Office on Smoking and Health, established in 1978, is a division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. The office is responsible for leading and coordinating strategic efforts aimed at preventing tobacco use among youth, promoting smoking cessation among youth and adults, protecting nonsmokers from environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), and eliminating tobacco-health related disparities. As the leading Federal resource for information on smoking, tobacco, and health, the office has most of the information available in published documents, by voice recording or fax, and through their Internet home page. Among its many functions, the office develops and distributes the Surgeon General's report on smoking and health, coordinates a national public information and educational program on tobacco use and health, and coordinates tobacco education and research efforts within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and throughout the governments both federal and state. Publications on how to quit smoking, health effects of smoking, secondhand smoke, and technical information are available upon request.
The Office on Smoking and Health offers free publications on smoking, tobacco, and health in English and Spanish. Posters, videotapes, and educational materials are available on how to quit smoking, secondhand smoke, and the health consequences of smoking.
