Assistant Secretary of Defense Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Ms. Mary Beth Long Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian & Pacific Security Affairs Mr. James J. Shinn was confirmed by the U. S. Senate as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian & Pacific Security Affairs on December 19, 2007. In this position, he is the civilian advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (USD(P)) and the Secretary of Defense on national security matters in the Asian and Pacific region. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense & Americas Security Affairs Paul McHale was nominated by President George Bush to be the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense on January 9, 2003 and confirmed by the Senate on February 4, 2003. In this position, he is responsible for the supervision of all homeland defense activities of the Department of Defense Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security Affairs Mr. Benkert was confirmed as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security Affairs on July 23, 2008. He had been the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security Affairs since December 2006, when the Global Security Affairs (GSA) organization was established. Previously, he served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy, GSA’s predecessor. The Global Security Affairs office is responsible for defense-related issues concerning building the capability of partners and allies; coalition affairs; technology security policy; security cooperation; counternarcotics, counterproliferation, and countering global threats; detainee affairs; and POW/MIA issues. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations & Low Intensity Conflict Michael G. (“Mike”) Vickers was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict & Interdependent Capabilities) on July 23, 2007. He is the senior civilian advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense on the capabilities and operational employment of special operations forces, strategic forces, and conventional forces.
