Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Among Students Aged 13–15 Years—Worldwide, 2000–2007

MMWR Highlights
- Overall, 80.3% of students aged 13–15 years had never smoked cigarettes, ranging from 87.4% in the South-East Asia region to 54.9% in the Americas.
- Nearly half of students aged 13–15 years who have never smoked reported being exposed to secondhand smoke at home (47%) or in places other than the home (48%).
- Students who have never smoked and were exposed to secondhand smoke at home ranged from 71.5% in Europe to 22.6% in Africa.
- Never smokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home were 1.4 to 2.1 times more likely to be susceptible to initiating smoking than those not exposed.
- Students who have never smoked and were exposed to secondhand smoke in places other than home ranged from 79.4% in Europe to 38.2% in Africa.
- Never smokers exposed to secondhand smoke in places other than home were 1.3 to 1.8 times more likely to be susceptible to initiating smoking than those not exposed.
