Past Program Activities, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health and provide HIV prevention education.

Past Program Activities

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Provided professional development to teachers to assist in the identification of programs, best practices, resources, and strategies that provide evidence of effective instruction related to physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention.
     
  • Developed new measurements for student achievement in health and fitness to assess student proficiency in physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention.
     
  • Partnered with STEPS to a Healthier Washington communities to support the implementation of a healthy schools leadership project.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Maintained a cadre of trainers to provide professional development on evidence-based HIV prevention education programs.
     
  • Provided workshops, training, and technical assistance on the inclusion of the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction-developed Guidelines for Sexuality Education in local decision making.
     
  • Provided training for teachers and district staff on effective programs to reach youth at high risk for HIV infection, particularly youth with special needs; immigrant youth; youth with limited English proficiency; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.
