Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Oklahoma, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Oklahoma Department of Education received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Provided training on the newly developed curriculum, The Courage to Say KNOW, at regional workshops statewide.
     
  • Trained peer educators in counties most affected by HIV infection to provide HIV prevention education and develop peer leadership teams.
     
  • Collaborated with numerous partners, including the Indian Health Care Resource Center, the Cherokee Nation, Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross, Hispanic Outreach, and others, to sponsor the “Students Teaching AIDS to Youth” conference for young people and their sponsors.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Developed a report comparing the state and national YRBS data.
     
  • Disseminated the results of the YRBS to schools, communities, policy makers, and other state agencies for the purpose of strategic planning, budgeting, policy development, and program planning and design.
     
  • Collaborated with the Oklahoma Department of Health to design and disseminate an awareness campaign for the YRBS.
