Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Nevada, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Nevada Department of Education received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education, support partnerships and collaboration around helping youth remain abstinent, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Nevada's current program activities, see Nevada.

Nevada's Program In Action

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Hosted the annual “Saying No in a Culture of Yes” workshop for school professionals working in HIV prevention education.

  • Provided training and technical assistance for teachers in evidence-based approaches to HIV prevention with an emphasis on school districts where data have indicated a lack of HIV prevention education.

  • Maintained a cadre of trainers to implement evidence-based, scientifically evaluated programs for youth in juvenile justice facilities.

  • Partnered with the Nevada Area Health Education Center to work with parents across the state to encourage parent-child communication and parental involvement in HIV prevention education in the home.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collected health risk data that are representative of students in grades 9−12 in the state.

  • Analyzed YRBS data and compiled, published, and distributed YRBS data summaries.

  • Educated local-level decision makers on how to use YRBS data to inform program planning.
