Healthy Youth





Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
New Mexico, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, New Mexico received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education, support partnerships and collaboration around helping youth remain abstinent, conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), and provide professional development training to DASH-funded partners through the Professional Development Consortium (PDC).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Collaborated with the Sexual Health and Risk Education Collaborative to implement a statewide strategic plan to strengthen communication, coordination, and collaboration among youth-serving organizations and agencies for the purpose of addressing HIV prevention.
     
  • Provided professional development to school personnel, public health educators, and other HIV prevention advocates statewide.
     
  • Provided technical assistance and disseminated HIV prevention tools and resources to school staff, institutions of higher education, public health educators, and other HIV prevention advocates.
     
  • Collaborated with the Indian Health Service to provide a wellness conference for Native Americans infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Providing National Professional Development

  • Collaborated with CDC and the West Virginia Department of Education to provide national professional development opportunities to CDC-funded state, local, and territorial education agencies.
     
  • Worked with the West Virginia Department of Education to plan, implement, and evaluate professional development activities aimed at building the capacity of state, local, and territorial education agency staff to prevent HIV infection and promote physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Partnered with the New Mexico Department of Health and University of New Mexico Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention to administer the Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey (YRRS, the New Mexico version of the YRBS) in middle schools and high schools statewide.
     
  • Distributed the YRRS data during statewide trainings and in conjunction with the release of school academic data to teachers, administrators, and to youth-serving organizations.
     
  • Collaborated with the Navajo Tri-State YRBS team to implement and share the results of the surveys.
