Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Maine, 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, the Maine Department of Education received
funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote
coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the
Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).For information on Maine's
current program activities, see Maine.
Past Program Activities
Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Maintained the Physicians and Schools Initiative Steering
Committee, which plans and implements initiatives to improve
communication and cooperation among physicians in private practices,
school nurses, and school health coordinators.
- Collaborated with the nutrition network to plan and implement
workshops for elementary teachers on how to incorporate nutrition
education into comprehensive school health education, local wellness
policies, and coordinated school health programs.
- Assisted schools in developing and/or maintaining a health
promotion program for school staff through the implementation of a
multi-day conference and follow-up meetings.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Provided professional development opportunities for schools and
youth-serving agencies including a World AIDS Update via interactive
television, a multiday professional development event to enable
participants to implement an evidence-based HIV prevention curriculum,
and booster sessions to update staff previously trained on implementing
an evidence-based curriculum.
- Collaborated with other state agencies and community organizations
to implement annual conferences such as the Youth Leadership Conference
on HIV; Boys to Men conference for boys, their fathers, and mentors; the
Girls Will Be Girls conference for girls and professionals who work with
girls; and the statewide Outright Youth Summit.
- Identified and purchased HIV prevention resources and making them
available to educators at no cost through the University of Maine at Orono.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Implemented the YRBS in collaboration with the Maine Center for
Disease Control and Prevention.
- Conducted workshops for school personnel on how to use the YRBS
data to increase their understanding of the health risk behaviors of Maine adolescents health risk
behaviors and the connection between risk behaviors and program
decision making.
