Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Massachusetts, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Massachusetts received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Provided technical assistance to schools selected for the statewide school health leadership institute to strengthen school health education, implement wellness policies, and build local capacity for CSHPs.
     
  • Provided face-to-face and online trainings for teachers on health education and nutrition education.
     
  • Developed and disseminated guidelines and resource materials to local districts to help them improve CSHPs.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Provided up-to-date information to school districts on strategies for preventing HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy.
     
  • Developed materials and guidelines to assist districts in increasing parent and community involvement in efforts to prevent HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy.
     
  • Delivered training to school and community agency staff on implementing culturally competent HIV, STD, and pregnancy prevention programs for Latino youth.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Published a report of the Massachusetts YRBS results, based on data from a representative sample of students in grades 9−12.
     
  • Distributed YRBS results to state and community agencies and to schools to assist in program planning.
     
  • Worked with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to coordinate youth surveys in order to improve data quality and reduce the survey burden on schools.
