Memphis,
Tennessee — 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, Memphis
City Schools in Tennessee received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent
and School Health to develop and implement an asthma prevention program,
provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
(YRBS).For information on Memphis'

Past Program Activities
Addressed Asthma
- Expanded the asthma case management program to elementary schools,
including trainings in the Open Airways curriculum and
development of student asthma care plans for individual students.
- Promoted the asthma management program by conducting presentations
to school staff, Parent-Teacher Associations, and community groups;
displaying asthma management posters in every school; and making
available the “Asthma Awareness” curriculum.
- Maintained an asthma control collaborative network through monthly
meetings of Memphis City Schools and Methodist/LeBonheur Healthcare
staff.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Provided professional development
for teachers, alternative school staff, and other school
personnel on HIV prevention education.
- Provided professional development trainings to community-based
organizations focused on reaching out-of-school and high-risk youth with
HIV prevention education.
- Presented information on HIV prevention and the Memphis City Schools
HIV prevention education professional development plan to five district
parent groups.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collected data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of
Memphis City students in grades 9-12.
- Provided YRBS data to Memphis City Schools’ program directors and
community agencies, and encouraging use of data in program planning and
program improvement.
- Maintained a Web site for information regarding implementation
of the YRBS and posting of YRBS data.
