Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Baltimore, Maryland — 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) in Maryland received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to develop and implement an asthma prevention program, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Baltimore's current program activities, see Baltimore, Maryland.

Past Program Activities

Addressed Asthma

  • Provided the opportunity for schools to apply for funding to conduct school-based activities that raise overall awareness of asthma and increase the participation of all members of the school community in asthma prevention activities.

  • Supported school-based asthma management activities that focus on recognizing the importance of knowing the signs of asthma attacks, decreasing exposure to environmental smoke, and taking personal responsibility for making the lives of asthmatic children better.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Developed and implemented a series of HIV/AIDS prevention lessons for elementary, middle, and high school students that can be used by teachers and health educators in every school.

  • Developed and delivered professional development on HIV prevention for administrators, teachers, central office staff, school police, school nurses, and other school staff, including custodians and food service workers.

  • Provided the skills-based Positive Voices! Positive Choices HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Program to students in middle schools and high schools and at community-based organizations serving youth, faith-based organizations, and institutions of higher education.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Used YRBS data to develop, review, and revise curricula and programs to respond to the identified needs of the students of BCPSS.

  • Used YRBS data to guide the development of curriculum, the selection of classroom support materials, and the establishment of ancillary programs provided through community partnerships.
