Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Hillsborough County, Florida — 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the School District of Hillsborough County in Florida received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Developed and disseminated an HIV/AIDS curriculum for students in grades 6–12 and for high school students at alternative education sites and career centers.
     
  • Provided training related to the HIV/AIDS education program to teachers, school nurses, social workers, and school psychologists.
     
  • Established and maintained an HIV Steering Committee, composed of a Materials Review Panel, a Medical Advisory Committee, a Community Outreach Advisory Committee, and a Student Advisory Committee, to advise the district on HIV programmatic activities.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collected data on youth risk behaviors that are representative of Hillsborough County students in middle and high school.
     
  • Presented YRBS data to key staff from the school district and local health department, School Health Advisory Committee, District Wellness Task Force, Parent-Teacher Association, local YMCA, and other community partners.
     
  • Used YRBS data to guide planning and improvement of programs to prevent HIV, STDs, and unintended pregnancy and guidance/psychological/social work services in the school district.
