San Francisco, California — 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the San Francisco Unified School District in California received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on San Francisco's current program activities, see San Francisco, California.

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Conducted trainings to update teachers and school staff on the district’s HIV/AIDS curriculum and policies.

  • Provided programs and support to help schools prevent HIV infection, especially among those students who are at high risk, including students with special needs, sexual minority students, and students of color.

  • Disseminated copies of the San Francisco Family Action Guide, which includes information about HIV/AIDS prevention and the prevention of youth health risk behaviors that contribute to HIV/AIDS infection, to parents and caregivers.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Used data from the middle and high school YRBS surveys to monitor the health-related behaviors of San Francisco’s youth, guide program planning, and evaluate the District’s school-based health programs.

  • Disseminated findings of the YRBS to schools, the district, city agencies, community decision makers, and relevant youth groups.

  • Published executive summaries, user-friendly brochures, and a full report of YRBS findings for middle and high schools.
