Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Kentucky, 2003–2008
From March 2003–February 2008, Kentucky received funding from CDC’s Division
of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health,
provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
(YRBS).For information on Kentucky's
current program activities, see Kentucky.
Past Program Activities
Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco
Use Prevention (PANT)
- Conducted regional Youth Tobacco Conferences with the state’s
Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program to address prevention
strategies within schools and local communities.
- Collaborated with foundation partners to provide professional
development for schools and their local community partners on
integrating local wellness policies into school and district improvement
plans by using the CSHP model.
- Worked with state interagency partners to provide professional
development that addresses CDC’s six youth health risk behaviors to key
stakeholders who support schools, communities, and families.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Provided professional development on HIV prevention evidence-based
curricula to health educators, school nurses, district health
coordinators, and community-based social service coordinators.
- Collaborated with area health education centers to provide HIV
prevention education to youth, including a strong focus on reaching
Hispanic youth.
- Adapted an HIV prevention curriculum to meet the needs of students
with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collected YRBS data to track health behaviors for a representative
sample of students in grades 9−12 in Kentucky, which will represent new
baseline data for all future reports.
- Developed and published a report comparing Kentucky’s YRBS
baseline and trend data with data from selected benchmark states
(Tennessee, Indiana, West Virginia, and South Carolina) and sharing the
report with districts, schools, local public health departments, and
other interested stakeholders.
- Collaborated with statewide agencies and researchers to share YRBS
data.
