Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Kansas, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Kansas received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

Past Program Activities

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Awarded grants and providing technical assistance to schools and districts to implement CSHPs.
     
  • Provided training to school personnel on establishing school health councils, using the School Health Index, and implementing the CSHP model.
     
  • Developed a CSHP marketing plan focusing on physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention that identifies target audiences, key messages, and strategies.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Established and maintained a collaborative relationship with personnel from state and local health departments, local school districts, colleges and universities, community-based organizations, and other partners to ensure that effective HIV/AIDS prevention education is provided to Kansas’s youth.
     
  • Provided training to staff working with students with special education needs and with out-of-school youth on strengthening and expanding HIV prevention programs.
     
  • Disseminated information on HIV/STD prevention and human sexuality education to Kansas teachers and school nurses.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Educated and trained school districts on the importance of the YRBS survey and the data it provides.
     
  • Distributed letters, flyers, and a YRBS report about the statewide results of the YRBS to all Kansas school districts.
     
  • Collaborated with the Kansas Safe and Drug Free Schools program to provide trainings to school districts on how to interpret and use state data to address youth risk behaviors.
