Georgia, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Georgia received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Georgia's current program activities, see Georgia.

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Provided professional development opportunities to update classroom health educators on current best practices in HIV prevention, epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and other STDs, and media influences on youth sexual behavior.

  • Established a cadre of trainers to market, facilitate, and host professional development events in each region, and providing technical assistance to local education agencies on their HIV prevention programs.

  • Disseminated resource materials to all classroom health educators on the state’s health education curriculum, universal precautions, HIV confidentiality requirements, HIV/AIDS statistics, and fact sheets on HIV/AIDS and other STDs.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborated with Georgia’s Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health to conduct the YRBS with a random sample of students in grades 6 –12 across the state.

  • Distributed results of the YRBS to local education agencies, local health departments, youth-serving community-based organizations, and other key partners.

  • Provided training to the training cadre and classroom health educators on how to use YRBS data as a tool for HIV prevention program planning and implementation.
