Past Program Activities, 2003–2008
Florida, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, Florida received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, support partnerships and collaboration around helping youth remain abstinent, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Florida's current program activities, see Florida.

Past Program Activities

Promoted Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Disseminated policies, guidelines, and resource materials to all local health agencies and local education agencies to assist in the promotion and implementation of CSHPs.

  • Provided funding to a district with documented health disparities to develop and implement a CSHP in all of the district’s schools.

  • Provided grant funding to districts across the state to implement strategies that promote physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use prevention.

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Conducted a Finding Common Ground Best Practices conference to highlight successful collaborative efforts among diverse stakeholders to achieve the greatest impact on reducing HIV infection among adolescents.

  • Assessed the availability and adequacy of HIV prevention education in school districts and using the results to guide program planning.

  • Developed a statewide plan for strengthening HIV prevention in schools through collaboration with the Department of Health, the state community planning group, the HIV/AIDS Advisory Committee, and the Parent-Teacher Association.

  • Provided online and face-to-face professional development opportunities to update teachers on advances in HIV prevention and effective curricula to prevent HIV infection.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collected data that are representative of youth in grades 9–12 across the state through a collaborative effort between Florida’s Department of Education and Department of Health.

  • Distributed information collected from the YRBS to statewide agencies, members of the statewide school health consortium, district staff, and community-based organizations.

  • Developed a comprehensive YRBS data report and numerous behavior-specific fact sheets to summarize YRBS results.
