Alabama, 2003–2008

From March 2003–February 2008, the Alabama Department of Education received funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

For information on Alabama's current program activities, see Alabama.

Past Program Activities

Provided HIV Prevention Education

  • Used a new reading initiative, Health Connections: AIDS Education Lessons to Supplement Literature-Based Instruction for Grades 6−12, to integrate HIV prevention education into English classes in the Birmingham City Public Schools.

  • Provided opportunities for classroom teachers, school administrators, counselors, and nurses to obtain professional development, resources, and consultation in developing effective HIV prevention education programs and policies.

  • Provided peer education workshops in areas of the state with the greatest prevalence of adolescent HIV/STD infections and unintended pregnancies.

Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Collaborated with the Alabama Department of Health to disseminate the results of the YRBS to a wide variety of stakeholders.

  • Collaborated with Alabama Public Television and other media outlets to develop youth-centered, youth-delivered messages relevant to the YRBS results.

  • Used YRBS results to facilitate policy and programmatic changes statewide.
