Healthy KidNorth Carolina’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The CSHP works with schools, local health departments, governmental agencies, and professional organizations to improve the health and academic success of North Carolina’s children through the implementation of the CSH model. North Carolina receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).

North Carolina's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Providing professional development for local School Health Advisory Councils at the Healthy Schools Institute.

  • Providing CSHP mini-grants and technical assistance to local school districts to assist in the implementation of components of the Coordinated School Health Program model.

  • Collaborating with state-level organizations to provide information and training to local school districts on promoting PANT and school worksite wellness.

  • Maintaining the Leadership Assembly, which brings together local superintendents and local health directors to discuss coordinated school health.

  • Collaborating with the NC Department of Public Instruction’s Raising Achievement and Closing the Gap staff to provide information and presentations on the relationship between health and education disparities and academic achievement.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Providing professional development for a statewide cadre of trainers in HIV/STD and teenage pregnancy prevention.

  • Providing trainings on HIV, STD, and teenage pregnancy prevention for districts located in areas of the state that are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.

  • Designing and implementing a New Teacher Academy for new health education teachers.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Administering the YRBS to collect data that are representative of North Carolina students in grades 6 − 12 through a collaborative effort between the state Department of Public Instruction and Department of Health.

  • Distributing information collected from the YRBS to statewide agencies, members of the school health advisory councils, district staff, and community-based organizations.

  • Placing YRBS survey results and marketing information on the Healthy Schools Web site.
