Description
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) has launched a "Health for All" Americans agenda as part of its efforts to meet the Healthy People 2010 objectives issued by the Federal Government in January 2000. The Institute has set 10 "Performance Goals" in the cardiovascular disease, asthma, and sleep disorders areas that target differing stages in the progress of disease, from early prevention to the prevention of recurrent events and of complications. To meet the performance goals, NHLBI is undertaking a wide range of "Performance Projects," each geared to measurable results in order to evaluate progress. A key element of the Performance Projects is reaching into communities to forge partnerships for health, especially for those areas and populations at high-risk for disease, including African-Americans.
