The social sciences encompass the study of the mind to studies of language, society, culture, the economy, politics, history, race, class, gender, and the human uses of the environment. Social science departments include anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, geography, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, speech/communications studies, and women’s studies. By exploring the foundations of language, communication, decision-making, knowledge and perception, UC social scientists seek to grasp the underlying forces shaping society.
