Celebration of New IT Center at “Faik Konica” School in Radusha, Kondovo Municipality
On Friday, May 16, 2003, U.S. Ambassador Lawrence E. Butler
will join with the Radusha community in Kondovo Municipality,
in celebration of the new IT Center located in “Faik
Konica” School. Other key participants at the event
will include Mr. Rahim Limani, Mayor of Kondovo, Mr. Sali
Salihu, Director of “Faik Konica” School, Mr.
Rafiz Aliti, “Faik Konica” School Parents’ Association
President, members of the village councils of Radusha and
Dvorce, members of the Association of ex-NLA Soldiers, local
residents and students.
The day will include a ceremony at 09:30 a.m., followed
by a tour of the IT Center. The participants will also enjoy
a programme including dance performances, organized by the
students of the school. The day will end with an official
cocktail reception.
The IT Center project was initiated by the village council
and “Faik Konica” School community of Radusha,
in the municipality of Kondovo, and supported by the United
States Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s)
Community Self-Help Initiative program (CSHI), who supplied
21 computers at a total cost of $19,461.00. OSCE - Skopje
and Kumanovo - collaborated in the project by providing logistical
support. The School community and village contributed to
this project by providing office space/classrooms in “Faik
Konica” School and at the village council offices,
providing certain materials and installing the computer equipment
and other materials for courses, and by recruiting employees
for the Center.
The centre will train and educate students and the unemployed
in computers and foreign languages, thus enhancing future
employment opportunities. The longterm benefits will be a
better skilled workforce, and the capability of some to set
up their own businesses. This is in response to the education
and employment needs of this community that has suffered
from the recent crisis and the closure of the local chrome
mine which left 5,000 –6,000 workers without employment.
The specific areas of training and services at the Center
will include computer training in wordprocessing, computer
design, accounting, business correspondence, introduction
to the Internet and email, and English language courses (and
eventually, other foreign languages). The center will also
provide job search assistance and translation services. In
addition, the center will be self-sustaining, as it will
charge a fee to private users for Internet access and other
services. The fees will cover the costs of operating and
maintaining the centre.
