Nancy Today in Congress--continuing resolution, appropriations, LIFT Act, and VAWA There are a few new developments in Congress today that I wanted to share with you. First, the Congress is planning to consider yet another continuing resolution that will keep them working through the end of next week. As you may recall, they previous have approved two separate continuing resolutions to extend the current session -- the most recent resolution will expire this Saturday (10-14-00). They need this time to complete work on several appropriations (funding) measures. Speaking of appropriations, one of the funding measures that the Congress is still working on is the bill that funds labor, health, and education programs and services (L-HHS-ED). This is the bill that funds adult education and literacy programs and services. The latest information I have is that the House plans to consider this bill sometime late next week (maybe Thursday, 10-19-00). I don't have any other details about the bill but will keep you posted. Third, the Literacy Involves Families Together (LIFT) Act is still alive and has a chance of being passed this session. This measure will extend and provide additional funding to the Even Start program. As you may remember, the LIFT Act was approved by the House on September 12, 2000. The Senate, however, has not yet considered this bill. The latest information I have is that the both parties in the House and Senate are still working to get this measure passed this year. To do this, they may try to attach the actual bill language to the L-HHS-ED funding bill. Again, I'll keep you posted. Finally, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed by the Senate only minutes ago. The vote was 95 to zero. This bill will now be sent to the President for his signature. That's what I know for today. I will continue to try to keep you up to date on these and other issues as the Congress finally finishes their work for the year.
