Hello from Alabama! I am the Education Specialist at the YWCA in Birmingham.
The Family Literacy Coordinator and I are in the process of establishing
family literacy, job skills, and life skills classes for our residents and
other women in shelters and transitional housing in the Birmingham area. We
are ready to purchase software that will help assess each participant's
skills and progress as she enters the program, continues to attend classes,
and leaves the program. I know of some titles, such as CASAS and TABE, but I
don't know where to find them or how to order them (or if these are the best
options). We would also like a variety of software participants could use
independently to develop reading, writing, grammar, math, typing, and
computer skills. Again, I've heard of Mavis Beacon, and have a whole resource
file on various software for sale, but I would love some direction from some
experienced providers, and a catalog or a company or a particular place on
the web to look for appropriate, stimulating, effective materials. Thank you
so much for your help!
