Parental involvement may be a teaching style issue. I know even at the community college level where students are adults, my peers often are uncomfortable having other staff visit their classrooms. Why is that anyway? There was recently a special on CBS, I think, about DOD schools. The Pentagon runs over 200 schools. The kids are doing great. The big difference is parental envolvement. The soldier parents are encouraged to come in and work with their kids. Minorities are more than amply represented. Some parents prefer to live in base housing rather than build up equity so their kids can attend these schools. The principal of one school said any school system could envolve parents. The parents said that public schools not only don't do it, but some actually discourage parental envolvement. DOD does spend 15% more on average on their schools. tz --- SEPerkins@aol.com wrote: > Sylvan has the ability to express my point of view > as well or better than I can. > > I agree wholeheartedly with the undertanding that > working with parents as the child's first and most > important teacher; giving parents' encouragement, > information, resources; and respecting their role > and their challenges in raising their children is > critical.
