FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAUBACH/LVA JOINT CONFERENCE WILL MOVE MERGER FORWARD
SYRACUSE, NY, MARCH 29, 2002-

The First Joint National Conference of Laubach Literacy International
(LLI) and Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., (LVA) scheduled for
May 29 through June 1, 2002, in San Diego, California, will give
those who attend a first-hand look at the resources that will be forged
into ProLiteracy Worldwide once these two literacy giants merge.

"We want the joint conference to contribute to the merger process,"
says Peter A. Waite, executive director of Laubach Literacy Action
(LLA), LLI's U.S. Programs division. "Laubach had a strong presence
at LVA's conference last fall, and it gave us the opportunity to
introduce ourselves along with our publishing and international
programs to an audience that-surprisingly enough-didn't know much
about us. LVA is bringing a lot to the table and we want LLA members
to have the same chance to meet our new partners in person, to ask
lots of questions, and to let us know what they think so that their
ideas will help shape ProLiteracy Worldwide."

Cultural change specialist Dr. Jennifer James has been slated as
keynote speaker to set the tone for the discussions and challenges
that lie ahead for the merging organizations. Dr. James, an urban
cultural anthropologist and community activist who specializes in the
areas of cultural change, diversity, and marketing intelligence will
kick off the conference on Wednesday evening, May 29, 2002.

Walter Anderson, chairman, CEO, and publisher of Parade Publications
will be the keynote speaker at the Literacy for All dinner banquet on
Friday, May 31, 2002. A high school dropout, Mr.Anderson obtained his
GED in the Marine Corps and later went on to become valedictorian of
his graduating class at Mercy College. He is a national spokesman for
the GED and a director of the National Dropout Prevention Fund. He is
also the author of several inspirational books and the recipient of
four honorary doctorates.

Other speakers will include: Dr. Victoria Purcell-Gates, professor of
Literacy at Michigan State University and Alexander Weir, motivational
speaker and winner of California's 1999 "Man of the Year" award.

The four-day Literacy for All program will also highlight Laubach's
international work with workshops and speakers from Afghanistan
(Nasrine Gross, author and U.S. representative of NEGAR, based in
Paris); India (Dr. Indira Koithara, managing trustee of Yuvaparivartan
(Youth for Change) in Southern India); Democratic Republic of the
Congo (Mulegwa Zihindula, director of REDECO in Kinshasa); and
Magdalena Fisher, president of the Education Committee for Soroptimist
International, La Mesa, Mexico.

In addition, the joint conference team has slated some 80 workshops
on literacy program management and training, recruiting volunteers,
English-as-a-Second-Language instruction, learning disabilities,
technology, women's literacy, workplace development, and correctional
system literacy programs. The traditional Student Breakfast will
include entertainment with a special performance by the Playwrights
Project, a nonprofit arts education organization that promotes
literacy, communication skills, and creativity through drama-based
activities.

Finally, some 30 information booths and vendors are expected to fill
the Literacy for All Exhibit Hall. New Readers Press, LLI's
publishing division, will display both new and tried-and-true favorite
reading, writing, math, family literacy, ESL, staff development, and
training materials (including several important new books at the ESL
low-beginning level). Also, the Laubach Literacy Action staff and the
New Readers Press ESL editor will be on hand to answer questions.
